Chief Science Officer, tranSMART Foundation. Brian Athey, Ph.D. is the Michael A. Savageau Collegiate Professor and Inaugural Chair of the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics at the University of Michigan Medical School. He is also a Professor of Psychiatry and of Internal Medicine. He is the founding Principal Investigator of the NIH National Center for Integrative Biomedical Informatics (NCIBI), one of eight NIH National Biomedical Computing Centers, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the NIH Common Fund (2006-2012). He also serves as US Academic lead and Chief Science Officer of tranSMART Foundation, a US and EU not-for-profit whose mission is to support the tranSMART open data and analytic software platform (see tranSMARTFoundation.org) to accelerate clinical and translational research. [In 2012-2013, Brian served as co-founder and C0-CEO of tF.] Brian led the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Next-Generation Internet (NGI) Visible Human Project and the DARPA Virtual Soldier Project. He has been a leader in the national NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) informatics Key Function Committee and the U-M CTSA. He has over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications and proceedings, ranging from bioinformatics, metabolomics, computational biology, optical imaging, and grid computing. He has served as a special advisor to the CIO of the NIH and to the DARPA Defense Science Office (DSO). Brian is the Chairman of the Technical Advisory Board Chairman of the 1Mind4Research, an emerging neuroscience Public Private Partnership. In 2000, Brian was awarded a Peace Fellowship from the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) for his work in counter biological terrorism in the 1990s. He received his Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology (Biophysics) from the University of Michigan, where he and collaborators were the first to propose the double helical ‘crossed-linker’ for chromatin structure.
